The first of them, the Core Mechanic is one that’s mandatory to play the game. In a very compact summary, Designing Around a Core Mechanic states that the game’s mechanics are stacked in layers. My tools for this piece are Charmie Kim’s core mechanic diagram and Hunicke, LeBlanc and Zubek’s MDA Framework. So when I use my tools to review the game, the result may strongly differ from that of a different approach. Design and analysis tools are based on models and every model is imperfect in nature. The problem with that is that the tools chosen for analysis may not fit entirely with the product, or that different tools may yield different results. Tools are necessary to understand what works and what not and why. Although I do believe it’s very possible to design a game from a completely empirical process, I’ve seen it happen and with good results, I think analyzing something from an empirical process is not possible. Now I’m going to get ridiculously formal with this analysis. During this process, I’ll try to explain why I think it is a design error and how to prevent it, which I hope is somewhat useful from a designer perspective. So I’m going to discuss what I think is a design error. That doesn’t mean the game is badly done, but if I were to make a game like Hollow Knight, I would definitely take this into consideration. There’s a lot to learn about a game like this.įor this piece I want to focus on one particular aspect I dislike about the game. This is a simple game to understand, its mechanics are transparent and clean, which makes it very easy to analyze. I need to check its entrails and see what makes it tick and how. That said I’m a game designer, so whenever I play a game I can’t help but dissect it and study it. As you do not have to trigger the boss to kill it.First and foremost, I love Hollow Knight, this game is solid with great lore, amazing art, inspiring music, and very well-tuned mechanics. once equipped, several bosses will be easier, enraged guardian is an example.Equip the Glowing Womb charm along with the Kingsoul to frequently spawn hatchlings while the Kingsoul restores SOUL.Charms can only be equipped and unequipped by using a bench.Once you've collected both sides of the charm, it will automatically change into the Kingsoul and will be ready for The Knight to be equipped. Acquisition: This charm is obtained from two different places, the first half of the charm is given by The White Lady in Queen's Gardens, while the second half is looted off from The Pale King's body right after clearing out the White Palace.Location: Queen's Gardens and White Palace.This charm is needed to unlock the Birthplace located at the bottom of The Abyss, where it will, later on, be reformed into the Void Heart. It may be one of the useful Charms in the game but uses up a high cost of notch that restricts you from combining and equipping multiple charms. While this is equipped, The Knight recovers SOUL at a slow rate every 2 seconds. Kingsoul is a charm that has regenerative properties. "Holy charm symbolising a union between higher beings." Charms require Notches and can only be equipped and unequipped while having The Knight sit on a bench. These charms are special items that provide The Knight buffs that will help with both traversing Hallownest and battling its foes. Kingsoul in Hollow Knight is one out of the 45 Charms that is found in the game. The bearer will slowly absorb the limitless SOUL contained within.
